Stirring start for SIBEC UK with rugby legend Gareth Thomas

Posted 31.05.2016

Last week Katie and Alison headed to The Belfry in Birmingham on 25-26 May for SIBEC 2016 and met with key movers and shakers from the leisure sector for two days of networking and socialising.

Over 150 industry buyers and suppliers attended this year’s event and participated in a rigorous schedule of 20-minute meetings across a day and a half when new business connections and partnerships were made.

To mark the opening of SIBEC UK 2016 Welsh rugby legend Gareth Thomas delivered an emotionally-charged keynote speech, providing a fascinating and poignant insight into his professional sporting career and his decision to come out as the UK’s first openly gay rugby player in 2009. Afterwards Gareth gave delegates the opportunity to take part in a relaxed and engaging question and answer session as well as the chance to grab a selfie with the former Welsh captain.

Along with productive meetings and effective networking, many of the delegates took part in a relaxed pre-event golf day. Making the most of the glorious sunshine, the SIBEC golfers enjoyed The Belfry’s stunning championship course and got to walk in the footsteps of Ryder Cup champions.

Feedback from delegates on this year’s event has been hugely positive with many saying it was ‘the best SIBEC UK so far’ and bookings are already filling up for SIBEC Europe, taking place on 16-19 November 2016 at the stunning The Ritz-Carlton Abama.
