Posted 10.01.2019

Sports Personality of the Year is upon us this Sunday and for the first time, the nominees will be announced on the night.

We asked around the team their personal SPOTY candidates and they came up with the below!

Lauren Stedman: For inspiring the UK public and showing that disability doesn’t stop you from achieving your dreams – Leandra

Harry Kane: Changed perceptions of English football and led a team that the country has fallen in love with again – Tom J

Anthony Joshua: For picking up another World Heavyweight Title and for giving her an unforgettable night at Wembley in October – Emma

Alastair Cook: For being England’s most successful batsman ever and signing off in fitting style with a century in his final test match – Tom B

Geraint Thomas: For giving cycling a much-needed feel-good story during a time riddled with controversy – Dan

Danielle Waterman: For closing the curtain on a fantastic international career which saw her score in the winning 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup and accrue 82 caps. She was described by England women’s head coach Simon Middleton as the “ultimate England player” – Sue

Lizzy Yarnold: For becoming the first Brit to successfully defend a gold medal in the Winter Olympics and showing determination of steel, especially when she wasn’t well when she won – Kate.

I’ve never been so excited and nervous watching the Winter Olympics. It was amazing that she became the first Briton to successfully defend a Winter Olympics title. All achieved with a chest infection – Ruth

And finally, one a little closer to home …

Anne Oke (Sonning Hockey Club U12 Coach): For encouraging and nurturing my daughter when she started playing hockey this term to build her confidence and love of the game – Nas
