London grassroots football gets FIFA boost

Posted 24.09.2018

On Saturday we were delighted to attend an event in which FIFA, The FA and London FA came together to launch a project to refurbish new changing facilities on Clapham Common, as part of a new legacy initiative to mark The 2018 Best FIFA Football Awards in London.

On a wet and windy afternoon, FIFA Deputy General Secretary Zvonimir Boban joined The FA’s Head of Women’s Participation, Louise Gear and London FA CEO Paul Bickerton on Clapham Common to ceremonially launch the renovation project.

Joining them was a collection of six FIFA Legends who spent time with players from the local community during a special football clinic – teaching them skills and technique – before taking on a mixed-gender team in an exhibition six-a-side game.

The FIFA Legends were Brazilian World Cup winner Gilberto Silva, fellow Premier League winner Kanu, Australia’s most capped player Mark Schwarzer, UEFA Women’s Champions League winner Laura Georges and multiple Women’s Premier League winners Kelly Smith and Rachel Yankey.

Following the major donation made by FIFA, the dilapidated changing facilities at Clapham Common will be made fit for purpose, with a dedicated women’s changing area, including separate showers, toilet blocks and changing areas.
