Celebrate World Mental Health Awareness Day with Anytime Fitness

Posted 10.10.2019

Today is World Mental Health Awareness Day and brings an opportunity to raise awareness, show support and advocate against the stigma associated with mental health.

While not everyone may be directly affected, we can all benefit from some straightforward and helpful self-care. It’s surprising how a few simple changes to your routine can make a significant difference and help enhance your focus, bring greater calm, boost endorphins and improve both your mental and physical health.

It’s so important to do this regularly, but today of all days is perfect for taking a moment, checking in with yourself and seeing if you can make some small steps to help your mental wellbeing.

To celebrate World Mental Health Awareness Day, Anytime Fitness’ Head of Fitness, Marvin Burton provides his quick tips about the power of exercise on the mind and body:

  • Exercise offers a great opportunity to release energy, tension and to expand stress in physical ways – by having a regular focus and structure, this could prove enough to form and create better habits which positively affect your mood, sleep, food choices while growing confidence.
  • Our bodies release a hormone called endorphins which give us a happy and fulfilled feeling afterwards – during exercise we will feel warm, burn calories and start to become out of breath. Our nervous system is stimulated by the movements throughout our muscles and joints. This increase in movement and lubrication throughout the body requires an increase in blood flow (circulation) and elevates our core temperature.
  • Increase the amount of activity you do throughout the day – this could include walking a little further than usual, such as to the shops, around the house or visiting friends. You can then start to make it more of a social occasion. For example, planning a walk and coffee shop visit during the week with friends, hiring bikes or eventually joining a gym. There may already be some local walking groups or community-based fitness classes you may be able to attend and try, so it’s well worth doing your research!
  • People grow in body confidence very quickly when they begin to exercise – the most powerful benefit of exercise is confidence. Exercise provides us with an increased positive outlook on life, reduces illness, injuries and extends life expectancy. If you are looking to move, feel and sleep better while experiencing reductions in aches and pains – exercise will undoubtedly help. To add to this, exercise stimulates our brains and helps prevent depression, anxiety and overall stress.
