Our 8 recommended sport podcasts

Posted 31.10.2019

If you’re interested in any of the big sports – rugby, football or cricket – you can take your pick of fabulous podcasts that regularly top the iTunes charts. But how to discover the more specialist podcasts in sport?

We asked our CEO, Sue Anstiss MBE, host of The Game Changers podcast, to share what’s on her podcast playlist right now. Here are eight great sports podcasts she’s recommending…

Fired Up Sport

Presented by Clare McDonnell in the UK and Kirsten Webster in Australia, Fired Up Sport positions itself as the first global women’s sport podcast. Supported by Sport England and This Girl Can, my favourite episode so far explored the background behind the success of Kenyan athlete Brigid Kosgei who recently smashed the sixteen year-old record for the Women’s Marathon in Chicago. And this week’s episode is an incredibly inspiring interview with Tracy Edwards who talks about her new film Maiden.

The Unofficial Partner

Owned and run by Richard Gillis and Sean Singleton, I’ve learnt so much listening to these podcasts hearing from some of the most influential people in the commercial sports sector.

A recent favourite was the interview with Richard Ayers, exploring sport’s digital transformation and future fan engagement. This week’s episode is a fascinating conversation with Ellie Norman, the first ever Head of Marketing for Formula 1.

All Things Sport

A sports podcast, hosted by Alex Preece, that talks to people from all walks of sports – from coaches to seasoned world champions. All Things Sport provides an inspiring, fascinating and insightful look into the world of sports. I absolutely loved the most recent interview with Stacey Copeland – all 90 minutes of it!

And a special shout out to Alex too, as it was his enthusiasm for the idea of my launching The Game Changers podcast that made all the difference when I was still in the ‘do I / don’t I’ phase of its development. Thanks for the encouragement Alex!

Women’s Rugby Pod

Hosted by England Rugby star Rachael Burford and Johnnie Hammond the Women’s Rugby Pod positions itself as the world’s first truly global women’s rugby podcast with news, views and opinions exclusively on the women’s game as it happens around the world.

Great to keep up with all that’s happening across the entire women’s game including the Tyrrell’s Premier 15s, Six Nations, Rugby 7s and Rugby X. This week’s episode features World Rugby Female player of the Year Emily Scarratt.

Sport and Recreation podcast

Interesting conversations with key players delivering sport and physical activity across the UK.

Hosted by Alex Sexton, Communications Manager at the Sport and Recreation Alliance.

Sportspeil is the player’s podcast where star athletes get the chance to share their stories and tell them properly with in-depth feature interviews.

Hosted by Alasdair Hooper and Will Moulton.

A Question of Performance

Lots of fantastic guests on this podcast as Tammy Parlour MBE talks with leaders in business, elite athletes and coaches about what improves, limits and drives performance in sport, the workplace and life.

The Try Hards

A female take on rugby as England World Cup winner Nolli Waterman and rugby broadcaster Laura-Jane Jones talk about both the women’s and men’s games with some great guests along the way.
