Newton Aycliffe Lesiure Centre

Newton Aycliffe Lesiure Centre

As Life Fitness Provides High-Tech Beauty for Maximum Results

QUEEN ADELAIDE, ELY – March 2, 2007 - The first phase of extensive redevelopment work at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre in County Durham will shortly be revealed to the local community. The £2.5M venture represents the single largest investment in a club to date by Competition Line, a market leader in the provision of state-of-the-art fitness facilities for the public sector under the brand name of Lifestyle Fitness. Upon completion of phase 2 in July, the three-storey gym facility will be the best equipped in the area, boasting 169 stations of Life Fitness cardiovascular and strength training equipment complete with the VIVO connectivity system.

Phil Ball, Director of Leisure for Sedgefield Borough Council (SBC), said: “The quality of the Life Fitness exercise machines reflects the aspirations of Competition Line and the Borough Council, giving us ‘best in class’ fitness equipment for residents and users. And whilst a first class building and equipment are not quite reason enough to claim a fantastic facility, when accompanied by quality staff training from the Life Fitness Academy, it conspires to make Newton Aycliffe one of the best gyms in the area.”

When the new facility is revealed to the public in mid-March, two thirds of the Life Fitness equipment will have been installed on floors one and two. The remainder will be fitted on the ground floor in the coming months, in advance of the opening in July 2007. It is anticipated that the current membership status of 1,500 will double as a result of the re-development work.

Gordon Hall, Managing Director at Competition Line, said: “Newton Aycliffe will represent fabulous value for money for members and will provide the highest quality standard of equipment and décor. Additions like VIVO will truly set the facility apart and as well as providing business benefits in terms of retention and customer communication, we also anticipate that it will inspire our instructors to be more creative and proactive in their fitness programming and the development of day to day customer relationships.”

To ensure that all instructors and personal trainers at Newton Aycliffe possess up-to-date knowledge and practical skills on coaching safe and effective exercise technique on the Life Fitness equipment, they will receive specialist training from the Life Fitness Academy (LFA). The training, which is REPs accredited for CPD, consists of a series of one-day workshops on Cardio (including Group Cross-Training and Cycling), Signature, Cable Motion, MTS (Motion Technology Selectorised), Hammer Ground Base and Circuit Series.

Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre originally opened in 1974 and SBC went into partnership with Competition Line in 1998. SBC operates three additional leisure facilities in the area – Spennymoor, Ferryhill and Shildon-Sunnydale Leisure Centres. Redevelopment work, of a similar nature to that carried out at Newton Aycliffe, is due to commence later this year at Spennymoor Leisure Centre in conjunction with Competition Line.

Richard Dowsett, Key Account Manager at Life Fitness, comments: “As well as the work we’re carrying out with Sedgefield Borough Council, we’re also teaming up with Competition Line to install new equipment at several other leisure centres in the County Durham area. So by 2008, the North East is set to have some of the best local authority leisure facilities in the country and we’re very proud of the part that we’re playing in the upgrade of leisure provision for these communities.”
