€‹Networking with industry friends at SIBEC

It was Nicki’s first time attending SIBEC Europe so we asked her to share some of her highlights from the fitness industry’s most successful business networking event.

“Some unseasonable weather around Madeira certainly made the plane journey a little ‘interesting’ for many delegates, but once on the island it was clear that a record numbers of operators and suppliers had come to the Pestana Casino Park Hotel.

1.Question time

The two-day event kicked off with a hugely insightful panel debate, featuring four key players from the fitness industry and two of our lovely clients – Jim Graham (The Gym Group), Sarah Leonie (Places for People Leisure) along with Diane Vesey (Anytime Fitness) and Dave Wright (MyZONE/CFM). Kate Cracknell, editor of Health Club Management, did an excellent job taking over the reins as host of the intense hour of conversation which covered topics such as £5 gym memberships, the advancements in wearable technologies, big data and the growth in boutique gyms.

2.Meeting new people

SIBEC People

It’s always a pleasure catching up with clients and industry friends in warmer climes and a relaxing environment, but for me it was the face to face meetings and concentrated business networking with new people that made the trip so worthwhile.

3.Madeira wines

Continuing my 30th birthday celebrations with the fabulous selection of foods and wines over the course of the three day trip, was of course one of my highlights. Being welcomed with a glass of Madeira on arrival at the Pestana Casino Park Hotel was a lovely touch and the selection of Portuguese wines that flowed during Thursday’s social event, made for a very amusing and quite eye-opening evening of industry tales.

4.Exploring the island

We did manage to squeeze in a quick run after our busy schedule of meetings, and soon discovered the joys of Madeira’s hilly terrain… It made for a great 6k along the coastline and through the beautiful town – also a great excuse for some scenic selfies.

5.Sun, sea and suppliers

We were lucky enough to soak up a few rays on our last afternoon in Madeira. With the business meetings complete, Sue and I raised a glass to the gorgeous sunshine and ocean view before heading to the airport, Heathrow bound.

Congrats to the McLean Events team for another great SIBEC – see you all next year!
