5 Tips for Top Twitter in 2011

If like millions of others across the world, you've jumped aboard the Twitter train, but are looking for a little guidance to get the most from this fabulous form of communication, here are our 5 Tips for Top Twitter in 2011......

  1. Be interesting
People will follow you (and continue to follow you) if you are sharing interesting information or entertaining them.  Before you press the send button on any tweet, just take a moment to ask yourself  'will this really be of interest to people that are following me?'
2.  Be generous
Twitter is all out sharing, so take the time to follow interesting people and then share the great things you find. Share links to useful websites and blogs, and photos and videos that you think will be of interest to your followers.

3. Be polite
Always credit other people if you are retweeting their information. Take the time to reply to people, answer their questions and respond to their comments too. Don' t be pushy or too salesy, as this is likely to encourage people to stop following you.
4. Finding people to follow
The best place to start is to find some people in your industry on Twitter and look (and follow) the people they are following and that follow them. For instance, if you' re interested in sport, fitness and social media a good place to start might be to check out who @sueanstiss follows and who is following her.
5. Don't rush it
Gathering a large number of followers takes time and rushing out to follow thousands in the hope that they will all follow you back is not the best approach. Ideally, you want a balance of people you are following with those that are following you.
